Dutch gaffers and electric crews — trained through the Netherlands Film Academy and concentrated around Hilversum's Media Park and the Amsterdam and Rotterdam clusters — translate a DP's vision into practical light on set.
Here is how this works in practice. We assemble gaffers and full electric departments across the Netherlands, from a single gaffer for an interview to a complete crew of best boy, electricians and rigging gaffers for a feature. Dutch lighting pros are near-universally fluent in English — the country ranks first in the world for English proficiency — so they work smoothly with global DPs and know both metric and imperial workflows. Many trained at the Netherlands Film Academy (Nederlandse Filmacademie), part of the Amsterdam University of the Arts.
Here is what that looks like on the ground. This keeps a steady talent base in the Randstad. Our team scopes the lighting plan with your gaffer and DP, sources the right mix of LED, HMI and tungsten fixtures from Dutch rental houses, and sets up crew openings so the department arrives prepared. The country' famously soft, flat 'Dutch light' — the quality that shaped Golden Age painting — is a natural reference point, and local gaffers know how to extend or shape it for studio interiors in Amsterdam and night exteriors across the polders.
Here is the short of it. Lighting work in the Netherlands carries practical and regulatory considerations our gaffers handle routinely. The mains standard is 230V/50Hz. Electric crews build distribution to Dutch electrical-safety norms, with power packs hire and operators arranged for locations short on power. Filming in heritage settings — the 17th-century canal ring, the Rijksmuseum, gabled canal houses — runs through the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, and rigging in covered interiors needs careful, low-impact methods.
Here is how the picture comes together. The country Film Production Rebates — a 35% cash rebates on qualifying Dutch spend via the Netherlands Film Fund (Nederlands Filmfonds) — makes engaging a full local electric department efficient for global shoots. The temperate maritime climate brings wind and rain, so night exteriors on dikes and open polders need weatherproofed fixtures and secure stands. Productions from period drama to high-end commercials have leaned on these crews. Each department is insured and rigging-certified.
FAQ
Our Lighting Network
What does a gaffer do on set?
Here is the breakdown. The gaffer is the head of the electrical/lighting department, responsible for executing the DP's lighting vision. They design lighting setups, manage the electric crew, set up gear, and make sure safe power distribution across the production.
What crew positions are in a lighting department?
A full lighting department has: Gaffer (department head), Best Boy Electric (gaffer's assistant, manages crew and gear), Electricians/Sparks (set up and operate lights), and on larger shoots, Rigging Gaffers and Generator Operators.
Do your lighting crews bring their own equipment?
Crew and gear are mostly separate. We can set up gear packages from Dutch rental houses to complement your crew booking. Some gaffers have personal gear for smaller shoots.
How many electricians do I need for my production?
Crew size depends on production scale: small shoots may need just a gaffer, medium shoots mostly need gaffer plus best boy and 1-2 electricians, while larger shoots need full departments with rigging crews.
Can your lighting crews work with international DPs?
Yes. Our gaffers are skilled working with global cinematographers and know global terminology, techniques, and workflow expectations. Many are bilingual Dutch-English.
Do you provide generators and power distribution?
We set up power packs hire and distribution gear through our rental partners. Power packs operators can be had in crew packages for shoots needing major power infrastructure.
