Stop motion creates the illusion of movement by photographing physical puppets or objects frame by frame, with tiny adjustments between exposures — a slow, exacting craft that draws on set construction, armature engineering and patient animation. The country has a respected animation heritage, anchored by Amsterdam's post-prod community and the country's strong art-school custom. This trains fabricators and animators in puppet, clay, object and cut-out techniques.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Our crews are near-universally fluent in English — the country ranks first worldwide for English proficiency — and we work with skilled Dutch fabricators who build pro puppets with metal armatures, silicone or foam bodies and replacement faces. We set up Dragonframe-equipped capture rigs and sound stages at facilities including The country Film Studios in Haarlem and Studio Aalsmeer, capturing at 4K and above with high-resolution mirrorless cameras.

Stop motion suits the controlled-studio nature of Dutch production well: the temperate maritime climate makes steady natural light unreliable, so the technique's reliance on stable, repeatable studio lighting is an advantage rather than a constraint. Stop motion is time-intensive — mostly only a few seconds of finished animation a day — so a short commercial can take weeks of animation plus pre-production and post, and our team plans schedules realistically. We can integrate motion control rigs for smooth camera moves while keeping frame-by-frame animation.
