SCENE 01 / DP SERVICES
Director of Photography Services
Experienced DPs for film, TV, commercials, and documentaries throughout Netherlands.
Here is how this works in practice. A Director of Photography shapes the visual narrative of a production through creative decisions about lighting, camera movement, lens selection, and composition. The Netherlands' distinctive flat landscapes, canal-threaded cities, and the painterly quality of its northern light — echoing the Dutch Masters tradition — have inspired cinematographers like Hoyte van Hoytema NSC ASC FSF, whose work reflects the country's deep visual heritage.
Here is the short of it. We connect you with skilled Directors of Photography who know both the creative and practical demands of your production. Whether you are shooting at a studio in Amsterdam or on location in Rotterdam, our team matches your project with DPs who bring the right visual sensibility, supported by the Netherlands Film Fund's production incentive and gear from rental houses like Camalot and Camera Facilities.

On Location
The Netherlands has shaped world cinematography through Robby Müller, Hoyte van Hoytema and Jan de Bont, and the soft, diffused 'Dutch light' of the Golden Age painters remains a genuine draw for camera departments.
Here is how this works in practice. We place Directors of Photography across feature film, commercial, broadcast and documentary work across the Netherlands, drawing on crews concentrated in the Amsterdam and Rotterdam production clusters. Dutch DPs and their camera teams are near-universally fluent in English — the country ranks first in the world for English proficiency — which removes friction for visiting directors and producers. Many came through the Netherlands Film Academy (Nederlandse Filmacademie), part of the Amsterdam University of the Arts.
Here is how the picture comes together. This keeps a steady supply of camera ops, focus pullers and DITs in the talent base. Our team matches each DP to the project's genre and visual references, then builds the supporting camera department around them, sourcing ARRI Alexa, Sony Venice and RED packages from Dutch rental houses. We set up tech scouts, lens tests and lighting plans during pre-production so the DP arrives on set with a fully resolved way, whether the shoot is a studio interior in Amsterdam or a run-and-gun documentary on the polders.
Here is the short of it. The Netherlands Film Production Rebates — a 35% cash rebates on qualifying Dutch spend, administered by the Netherlands Film Fund (Nederlands Filmfonds) — makes engaging a local DP and camera crew financially efficient for global shoots, and the Netherlands Film Commission helps structure qualifying spend. The country's distinctive flat, even northern light, the quality that shaped the work of Vermeer and Rembrandt, gives cinematographers a naturally soft key across long stretches of the day, while the temperate maritime climate brings changeable, fast-moving skies that a seasoned local DP knows how to read.
Here is what we have to work with. Productions from 'A Bridge Too Far' in Arnhem to Paul Verhoeven's 'Black Book' and 'The Fault in Our Stars' in Amsterdam have leaned on Dutch camera departments who know how the 17th-century canal ring, Rotterdam's today's skyline and the open dike landscapes photograph. Filming permits run through the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, and our DPs work fluently within those frameworks.
FAQ
Our DP Network
What experience levels of DPs do you provide?
Here is the breakdown. We give DPs across all experience levels: emerging cinematographers for indie and low-budget projects, mid-level DPs with solid commercial and documentary credits, and senior DPs with feature film and global broadcast experience. We match experience to your budget and project needs.
How do you match DPs to projects?
We review your creative brief, reference materials, and budget to shortlist DPs with relevant genre experience and aesthetic alignment. You receive curated showreels and can request direct conversations with candidates before booking.
What camera systems do your DPs work with?
Here is what that looks like on the ground. Our DPs are proficient across all major cinema camera systems including ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, Blackmagic, and Canon cinema lines. Many specialize in specific systems but all are adaptable to production needs and rental availability.
Do DPs come with their own equipment?
Some owner-operator DPs bring personal camera packages, while others work with rented gear. We set up gear sourcing based on your preference and budget, whether through DP-owned gear, rental houses, or production-given gear.
Can you provide international DPs for shoots in Netherlands?
Yes. We can source global DPs for shoots in Netherlands, handling work permits and logistics. We also give Dutch DPs for global shoots needing local cinematography talent abroad.
What's included in DP day rates?
Standard DP day rates cover on-set cinematography services during production hours. Pre-production work (tech scouts, shot listing, meetings) is mostly billed separately. Gear, camera assistants, and late hours are extra based on project scope.
