Focus Pullers / 1st ACs

Here is how this works in practice. We supply focus pullers and first assistant camera who hold key focus through each take on Dutch shoots. Our first ACs pull focus on moving subjects and moving cameras, build and keep the camera package, manage lenses and filtration, mark actors, handle the wireless follow-focus, and keep the camera ready and trusted through the shooting day. They work closely with the camera ops and the director of photography, and within the CAO collective-labour-agreement framework.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Because Dutch crews are near-universally English-speaking, a first AC integrates directly into a global camera department with no communication gap on a fast set. We match the focus puller to the camera format and shooting style of your production — narrative, documentary or commercial — and integrate them from prep.

Here is the short of it. Focus pulling is one of the most demanding tech crafts on set. The Netherlands has a deep, well-trained camera pool to draw from. Dutch camera departments work behind cinematographers in the lineage of Robby Müller and Hoyte van Hoytema. The precision expected on that kind of work runs through the whole department, first AC had. Operators and ACs here are used to the country's different environments — canal-side locations, open polders, the today's interiors of Rotterdam, the changeable North Sea coast — and the focus discipline each demands.
